Terrible experience

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Newport Academy - Terrible experience
I dont know anything about counseling or therapy or abuse or neglect. I do know that my child was there 8 weeks and Newport barely kept in touch with us. Newport lied to us repeatedly. Get everything in writing. Newport staff made so many false promises. Newport staff hardly return calls or emails. They really only care about getting paid. Its all a big cash grab. I dont know what the best thing to do with a troubled teen is, but you should avoid Newport for sure.

Please, please, please dont do a disservice to your precious child and send them to this horrible chain. I promise they will come out with trauma and forever scarred and worse for it. They need real and true love, support, and help. This is NOT it and will only cause further harm. Please look elsewhere and dont fall for their sales pitches. They are truly snake oil salespeople, incredibly dangerous, and unqualified. The truth will come to light. Do more research please!

Thank you ! I was planning on sending my daughter there Dec 26th, and this was sooo helpful!

At 10,000 a week, 90 days tx .

No way Jose ! We are looking elsewhere .

Wish I had found this review before we sent our child there. He was only there for less than five days, but spent about half that time in a crowded ER when he was supposed to be treated for his extreme social anxiety disorder. We live 2967 miles away so Newport was going to let him sit in the ER waiting room until I could get there the following afternoon

This place was the most PERMANENTLY traumatizing thing i have ever experienced.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

i went to newport academy in bethlehem, ct for a total of 61 days. going here is one of the worst decisions i have EVER made.

i was neglected, uncared for, and practically untreated. i was admitted for depression, anxiety, bpd, etc. and was released while struggling with all these things PLUS a new PTSD event!! i have been out for over 3 months and i still have constant flashbacks and nightmares.

i hope someday in the future, this place is shut the *** down. nobody deserves the horrid treatment from this place. if being neglected and left to deal with everything alone is how you get better, then sure, itd be good for you.

the food is disgusting, and if you dont like it, theres no other options and you starve. the staff are rude and gossip behind your back/violate HIPAA rules, the clinical treatment team arent there on weekends so if youre struggling on saturday or sunday you basically have to suck it up, you only get one 5 min phone call per day, and if you talk negatively about the place and tell your parents what theyre doing to you they will cut the call, i was called delusional by my therapist, i received death threats from other girls there and they did absolutely nothing, some girls there were full blown drug addicts and going through withdrawals and wanted to kill everyone around them, i was bullied and they didnt care, when my brother attempted suicide while i was there they didnt let me have any extra phone call time when i wanted to talk to him, any time i didnt feel good or was sick they didnt give a damn, they practically romanticized drugs, sexual assault/rape, self harm, suicide, and more, staff members picked favorites and gave them extra stuff like extra phone call time and higher-up staff did nothing to stop it, youre forced to go offsite even if you dont want to and if you dont, its counted as a refusal, staff make inappropriate/triggering jokes, if you do anything wrong you get isolated (timeout), youre cut off from the entire world other than 5 minutes to talk to your mom or dad once a day, theyre mentally and verbally abusive, the staff are under-trained and theres basically no requirements to work there other than a small background check, they gaslight you, they tell you youll only be there for 2-6 weeks when in reality 95% of girls stay for 2-3 months unless your insurance cuts or your parents pull you (i was pulled at 61 days but they gave me completion bc my mom threatened them), you forget what real life is like without locked doors, *** tests every 3 days and never being alone, some of the girls are literal psychopaths and they mess with your head, they put you on medication that numbs you out so you dont remember anything, there arent any family visits, theyre homophobic, I COULD LITERALLY GO ON FOREVER.

theres so much more than what i just listed.

if youre planning on going here or sending your kid here, please, for the love of god, dont do it. i have horrible PTSD from this place and it ruined my life.

Abused at Newport academy

I was at Newport for almost three weeks and I can 1000 percent say that I left with more problems than before coming. My parents admitted me into this program for my obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety hoping that this place would be a good fit for me.

I knew the second I talked to the girls that this place was going to be horrible and I was right. I was bullied not only by the girls, but the staff as well. One staff literally called me ugly to my face and told me that my music was horrible. This is the same staff that used physical force to get a granola bar out of my hand because it was 20 minutes over food time and ended up scratching me with her nail. When I told her she scratched me she laughed and got the residential manager to "put me in my place" even though I explained that this specific staff member was bullying me and making fun of my compulsions.

There is no one higher up. There are supervisors, but unless you butter up to the staff the super visors won't listen to you whatsoever. Staff are allowed to refuse snack, phone calls, and bathroom privileges depending on how they feel about you. I was locked out of my bathroom every night because I had low blood sugar in the morning and struggled to get out of bed.

I also was not given proper medical care. When I did pass out on the ground they accused me of lying and wouldn't let me lie down despite the fact I literally blacked out.

Also girls threatened to beat me up multiple times and nothing was done about it. I was called ugly, disgusting, a freak and so many names by the girls and the staff would gossip. There is almost no requirements to work there, they literally will take people off the street. When talking to staff about the problems they would say "your a child i don't have to listen to you" no one cared about me.Everyone was awful and I'm worse now than I was coming in.

Discharged my daughter over hearsay and horrible customer service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Newport Academy - Discharged my daughter over hearsay and horrible customer service

My daughter was discharged because another girl said she put hands on her, supposedly. Well there was no proof, no marks, no witnesses, and it wasn't even reported for hours.

Actually, my daughter was being bullied for days prior and nothing was being done about it. I tried to contact her therapist that day to see what happened and to see if she had talked to my daughter, but she would not respond to me.

She was discharged/kicked out on a Sunday and I had no contact for four days till I finally called them. They gave me no discharge paper work, or any advice. They didn't bring in any therapist to talk to my daughter or the other girl to find out if it actually happened or to see if they were ok.

I feel like they failed my daughter in so many ways.

They should have brought in a therapist to see what actually happened and to see if she was ok. She was still a patient, and she was accused of something like a criminal. My daughter is not perfect, but she is not violent either.

Since then I have finally got a hold of medical records, but they still won't send over information to any other places because a person is out of the office. That was six days ago.

I was told it could be done in 1 day. So, my daughter still is being hindered my Newport Academy by the medical records department.

The customer service is horrible. I cannot believe after she was discharged 4 days later I had to call someone to get discharge paperwork and just to talk to someone. It was only 4 lines long and pitiful at that, and they wanted me to sign it.

Another thing that bother me about the program that my daughter told me is that they would hardly ever let them go outside.

They had a beautiful acre fenced in lot. The staff were on their phones a lot, so the girls watched TV a lot, she said, especially on the weekends or played Nintendo Switch.

I am kind of worried why this happened so much.

I would highly recommend looking at other places other than Newport Academy for your family members and friends. This was a huge mistake for us and I hope other people dont make the same mistake we made.

after rolling over, doing everything that was asked of us they granted him a spot only to find they filled the spot the day before our arrival! Yes, everything was authorized by our insurance. We had gone through a two-hour session with a therapist. They said we could bring my teen tomorrow (Saturday ). I called Sunday only to find out they filled my spot with someone else! So unprofessional. They already accepted and had our child approved. Yet they gave our spot away to another child (who is no there yet)! This Place is disgusting. Don't even bother checking this place out. Worthless, they can't follow through or keep their word!

Dangerous to send loved ones there

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
DO NOT SEND LOVED ONES THERE (CT facility) They tell you everything you want to hear to get your child admitted (medical care, dbt therapy, yoga, classes, groups , activities and thorough communication) - COMPLETELY FALSE. They do not have those programs and if they do it is on a very infrequent schedule and not well run. The majority of their staff is not credited and the turn over is extremely high. The admissions people are paid on commission but once you are there it is not what they claim it is to be. Just want $$ Appalling that they have not been shut down. Dangerous for them to have at risk individuals in their care.

Terrible , disorganized mess for my daughter

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

My daughter who does not have a substance abuse issue but was suffering from severe ocd, which they claim they treat. They did not offer the therapy they claimed (DBT, EMDR) no exercise group schedules, no adventures in adventure therapy.

Online equine therapy! What? Food was awful. Unstable and untrained staff.

Limited care of nurses on staff. No hot water for 5 days, pool broken for over a month. My daughter scratched her legs up, and rather then contacting skilled staff, they called a crisis team involving 2 large men that came to her room after she calmed down, handcuffed her and took her to the hospital as a 5150 when she never threatened to kill herself. She was discharged 5 hours later.

CrossFit was only added after complaining, along with DBT and EMDR. They were supposed to find an ocd specialist which never happened. The home instead of being therapeutic was negative and disorganized from the beginning. My daughter had ptsd after her 36 day stent there and came home worse then when she left.

She said everyone that she met there left in worse shape then when she came. Oh and they are opening MORE houses! When they cant run the ones they have with the qualified staff they claim to have. This is 100% about the money and if your kid leaves, no worries, there is another family waiting in line to take their spot.

So why change? Now we have no services when she decided she could no longer stay there and we are starting from stage 1 for another qualified facility

They have staff that are not certified to deal with trouble teens.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We flew to CA after being accepted to the program and the following day they called us to let us know that it was not going to be a good fit. Why would you have someone fly across the country and then decide it was a good fit. We found out later that day that another male patient had hung himself in his room due to lack of supervision. I loved her therapist in CT and she went up and beyond to help us, but their corporate office had made up their mind. Ironwood Academy the best, safest, and truly work on the teens best interest. Campus is amazing and safe. I would highly suggest calling Sue Horton before you head to CA!

We were informed of nothing when our daughter was sent there. She didn't call home, (even after earning it) and was free to call someone else that had been on the restricted list. Admissions promised us flight reimbursement and then claimed they didn't; thankfully I saved the email. After initially telling us we had a $250 copay, we were told hours before her flight that the actual copay was $4,000. I could go on and on. They changed her meds and then sent her home without any meds and no discharge papers. She returned after a month worse off than when she left. I wouldn't send anyone there. The staff is incompetent and their "treatment" plans are a joke.

Please do not send your kids to Newport academy!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I sent my daughter to newport in Connecticut in September 2017 after two days of her being there the communication cut off and no way to contact them. We live in Texas and I was terrified that something was happening after my daughter called crying saying that there where girls wanting fight her .

I tried to contact them several times by email and there main number which no one answers you have to leave a message . After two weeks and virtually no one contacting me I went and removed her from Newport and placed her in a treatment center in Malibu California where she is doing excellent !!!

The most phones calls I received from them was when i told them i was coming to get her they tried in every way to keep her there .I am so glad I listen to my gut feeling and went and removed her .she was receiving little to no counseling there and there where some days she didn't even eat and it was never reported to me .My daughter was in worst shape then when i left her . Please please read all the reviews on this place and you will see the same things over and over .

Complete false advertising. They assure you that they have all these therapeutic activities (yoga, exercise, meditation, classes) but it is not true.

They warned our daughter to not tell us about the lack of services threatening that we were going to have to pay for her stay regardless if she remained there. Promised us communication and received none. Later found out that majority of the staff had no valid credentials.

DON"T SEND YOUR LOVED ONES THERE. It should be shut down.

Very true. You only get good communication when you are possibly placing your child there, or removing them.

They do not communicate, and they lie. They are not equipped to handle all the issues kids there have.

I actually have mobile numbers (probably Google Voice) of all her therapists, teachers and the residential person. And they all reply back on time.

While it took me time to adjust to the experience, the communication is not something that I would be upset about. It is actually plenty, timely, open and respectful.

Healing teens restoring families

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I have read some of these reviews and completely disagree with the negative ones. I sent my daughter to NA end of 2017. Yes, she walked off campus refusing to stay and it was very cold that night. I remember feeling helpless so far away but was reassured that staff was with her the entire time and eventually the police were called to help talk her into going back. Within 30 mins she was back on campus. I am certain the fresh crisp air served her well. She was always safe and never alone. Communication was on point. Actually, almost over the top. After intake you are contacted immediately by her family counselor, nurse and team leader. It was very reassuring. You immediately are scheduled to attend family orientation and weekly meetings are set up for family counseling. My daughter was able to make daily phone calls (only allowed certain time until earned more). If I needed to speak to her or our therapist there was always someone you could talk to. Yes, there were times in which the call went to VM but I always heard back the same day. Her family therapist was hands down one of the best and went up on beyond to help our family. I will be forever grateful. I know they had their hands full with my daughter and most of the staff was there to help heal, guide and work with her to get to the root of the problem. We are heading to the CA facility next week and I am again humbled by the opportunity to work with this amazing group of professionals. So many went to bats to help get her readmitted for another opportunity to get through to her. I struggled sending her elsewhere after experiencing the care she was given in a very safe, loving and clean environment. Trust me when I tell you, your child could not be in better hands. I am grateful and blessed by the entire Newport Academy team. I have recommended this facility to many parents looking for help with their adolescent. You won’t be disappointed. Mom that would walk to the end of the earth for her daughter!
